UNIVERSITY of Perpetual Help System Dalta rambled on its pre-season billing, pulling off an impressive 25-23, 16-25, 25-14, 25-22 victory over Jose Rizal University to seize the early lead in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament Tuesday at the San Andres Sports Complex.

It was the able duo of Mary Rhose Dapol and rookie Shai Omipon who delivered the needed fire power for the Lady Altas to their second straight win in as many outings.

The Lady Bombers who seemingly lost steam after the second set, absorbed their second straight debacle in as many games.

Unlike the luckless JRU Lady Bombers, the Lyceum of the Philippines University stormed back from 2 and 3 set losses to turn the tables on Mapua, 25-20, 16-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-5 for a rousing start.

Dapol went on to finish with a career-high 28 points, including eight service aces, and collected 12 digs while Omipon, a Trece Martires City native, nailed 19 kills for Perpetual, which won despite committing 31 errors.

Sydney Niegos shone the brightest for JRU with 14 points, while Mary May Ruiz contributed 10 kills.

Johna Dolorito led the Lady Pirates’ balanced scoring with 16 points, while Jewel Maligmat and Janeth Tulang each scored 14 points.

The Lady Cardinals’ defeat spoiled rookie Roxie dela Cruz’s debut, drilling in five service aces to finish with 20 points, and had 11 digs and four receptions.

In the men’s division, Mapua prevailed over LPU, 25-12, 25-13, 25-19 with Ben San Andres, using his experience from the off-season tournaments, leading the attack for the Cardinals.

He finished with 15 points, including five service aces, while Alvin Macadangdang had two blocks for a 10-point outing to go along with four digs.

Zonxi Dahab had three blocks for a 13-point outing while Joan Daguna was the other LPU player in double-digits with 11 points to go along with eigth digs.

Setter Venice Puzon, the Lady Pirates’ captain, also had a solid game, scoring four of her seven points from the service line and tossed in 18 excellent sets.

Chenie Batac tallied 13 points while Nicole Ong chipped in 11 points, including two blocks for the Lady Cardinals.
