DEPED REGION 1 LAUNCHES READING FIRST PROGRAM

/ 11 June 2021

TO BETTER teach children how to read, the Department of Education’s office in Region 1 launched its Reading First program, a scheme that will also address other factors that affect the reading capability of learners.

DepEd Region 1 Director Tolentino Aquino said that the program will take a holistic view of the reading process.

“Holistic approach na everybody magtutulungan in making sure matutong magbasa ang bata; teachers, parents, and anybody na puwedeng tumulong. Parang they formalized ‘yong ginagawa na ng mga divisions na different approaches,” Aquino said.

Aquino said the program will also assess learners to find out why they are unable to read well according to the level of the curriculum they are in.

“We will investigate the readiness and capabilities of teachers across all curriculums. We will examine materials and appropriateness of materials in our reading program,” he added.

The program will also take into consideration other factors affecting the children’s learning outside of school, such as proper nutrition

The DEPED also partnered with the Commission on Higher Education, state universities and colleges, and private institutions that offer education courses.
