KABATAAN Partylist on Saturday called on youth to dedicate talent to nation-building in order to breakthrough politics of change against traditional politicians and tyrants.

During the 2nd National Youth Day celebration, Kabataan Partylist, in collaboration with youth groups and artists, organized an open mic event titled ‘Bata, Bata! Ang Sining Mo’y Mapagpalaya!’
The event serves as platform to showcase talents and advocacies of fellow youth on stage to promote active citizenship and nationalism among peers.

Additionally, the talent show acts as a protest against various threats to freedom of expression and youth idealism in public service, such as red-tagging, terrorist-labelling, and the proposed revival of Mandatory Reserve Officers Training Corps.

The group said Filipino youth have a multitude of avenues through which they can contribute to the nation, extending beyond compulsory military service.

“They have already demonstrated this through their involvement in the frontlines of our bayanihan efforts amid the pandemic and in advancing good governance. Mandatory ROTC, along with other repressive and militarist policies, not only restrict the youth’s potential but also imposes unwarranted burdens, fees, and abuses,” they said.

The group added that to steer the country out of crisis, the national government should prioritize investing in the youth, enabling them to harness their skills and talents for the purpose of nation-building.

The group further reiterated a substantial budget should be allocated to education, equivalent to 6 percent of the country’s GDP, in alignment with global standards.

“Relevant social services should also be properly funded. To this end, safeguarding spaces for critical youth voices and genuine representation is equally crucial,” they added.

As the upcoming Barangay and SK Elections of 2023 approach, the organization challenged youth to step forward, assume leadership roles, and drive the desired change within the nation.

“It is imperative that we leave behind the traditional politics and tyrannical way of past rulers, championing a new democratic politics fueled by hope and proactive transformation. Let us embody the leadership we wish to witness within the government, inspiring others to serve the people,” the group further said.
