YOUTH GROUP WANTS NEW DEPED SEC TO ADDRESS SEXUAL HARASSMENT ON CAMPUSES

/ 21 June 2024

A YOUTH group hopes that the next Department of Education Secretary will address the sexual harassment happening on campuses.

Enough Is Enough Ph, an anti-abuse youth group, made the call following the resignation of Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio as the DepEd chief.

The group mentioned that Duterte-Carpio was silent and did not address the issue of sexual abuse and harassment on campuses.

“During her stint as Education secretary, Duterte treated the issue of on-campus sexual abuse as a public relations problem instead of a systemic one,” said Sophie Reyes, EIE Lead Convenor.

Meanwhile, the group also said they will not accept any political appointee or personal friend as DepEd secretary.

“We will not settle for anything less,” Reyes said.

EIE demanded that the new DepEd Secretary must enact reforms in the education system including mandating schools to provide psychological, legal, and financial support for victim-survivors, charging predators and enablers with criminal and administrative cases, revoking professional licenses and the blacklisting of campus predators, establishing a publicly-available national registry of sex offenders, and establishing an anti-retaliatory policy to protect victims from retaliation by perpetrators.
