SOLON WANTS TO HASTEN RETURN TO OLD SCHOOL CALENDAR
HOUSE Committee on Basic Education Chairman Pasig Rep. Roman Romulo wants to hasten the reverting of school calendar to prevent suspensions of face-to-face classes to ensure quality education.
HOUSE Committee on Basic Education Chairman Pasig Rep. Roman Romulo wants to hasten the reverting of school calendar to prevent suspensions of face-to-face classes to ensure quality education.
“Noong isang nagpasa na po kami sa plenaryo ng resolusyon na halos isang taon din naman naming dininig na hikayatin ang DepEd na pabilisin na po ‘yung pagbalik ng ating old academic calendar kung saan Abril at Mayo na ‘yung summer [break] muli,” Romulo said in a radio interview on Wednesday (08 May 2024).
On April 6, House Resolution No. 1650 was passed urging the Department of Education to revert to the old school calendar which is June to March.
Romulo said that in-person classes remain to be the “most effective way” to achieve quality education.
Reacting to the shortened number of days once the old school calendar would be reverted, the lawmaker said that modular learning could be done every Saturday to achieve the minimum 180 days of classes per school year.
“Mabawasan man po ‘yung araw pero kalidad na edukasyon naman ang na-attain natin, siguro mas matimbang pa rin po ‘yun… ang importante po mas maraming araw ang masigurado nating face-to-face para quality ‘yung education,” he said.
Some in-person classes have been suspended in the past days due to extreme heat.
