SENATOR SEEKS TO STRENGTHEN LOCAL SPORTS PROGRAMS FOR YOUNG ATHLETES

/ 15 April 2026

SENATOR Mark Villar has filed a measure seeking to strengthen local sports programs to further develop young Filipino athletes.

In Senate Bill No. 1702, Villar underscored the State’s duty to promote physical education and encourage sports programs, league competitions, and amateur sports—including training for international competitions—to foster self-discipline, teamwork, excellence, and the development of a healthy and alert citizenry.

The senator cited an article from the Institute for Nationalist Studies, which noted that Filipino athletes not only compete in their respective sports but also face competition among themselves for limited resources.

Villar said Filipino athletes need continuous support as they continue to make their mark in the international sports scene.

“Not only should they be rewarded when they become victorious, but they must always be supported when they are on the grind,” he said.

The bill proposes strengthening local sports programs by institutionalizing three program funds aimed at supporting young athletes.

These funds will provide vouchers to help cover registration, membership, participation, and training fees.

They will also support local sports clubs, recreation clubs, and sports organizations in implementing various projects and programs, as well as in improving sports facilities.
