P3.6-B NEEDED TO REBUILD TYPHOON-HIT SCHOOLS

AT LEAST P3.6 billion will be needed to repair schools damaged by typhoon Rolly, the Department of Education said on Thursday.

A report submitted by the DepEd Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service said 1,033 schools were damaged in 41 school divisions in Metro Manila, Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol and Eastern Visayas.

Some 6,000 classrooms were damaged.

The Education department also reported that 381 schools had damaged furniture, learning materials, and computer sets.

Classes remain suspended in 324 schools in Catanduanes and Legazpi City affecting 120,916 students.

Meanwhile, 598 schools or 3,516 classrooms in 31 school divisions in Metro Manila, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol and Eastern Visayas were being used as evacuation centers.

These evacuation centers house 15,714 families.
