OLDEST LGBTQI GROUP SEEKS JUSTICE FOR SLAIN TRANSMAN
THE UNIVERSITY of the Philippines Babaylan, the oldest LGBTQI student organization in the country, joined calls for justice on the killing of transman Ebeng Mayor in Quezon City.
“These heinous crimes are unacceptable. They are part of the cycle of anti-LGBTQI abuse by a society that treats us as second-class citizens. We demand nothing less than full, rigorous and transparent investigations, and the speedy execution of justice,” the group said in a statement.
After missing for three days, the Philippine National Police said Mayor’s body was found on Friday showing evidence of rape and genital mutilation.
According to police’s autopsy reports, Mayor’s body was beheaded while a wooden stick was shoved into the sensitive part of his body.
It added initial indications showed he was murdered by at least two suspects.
PNP has yet to provide further details about the incident, but one suspect has already been arrested. He was charged with rape with homicide and robbery.
UP Babaylan stressed Mayor’s death should spur calls for better protection of the LBTQI community and condemnation of hate crime.
It also urged lawmakers the need to pass the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression Equality bill which seeks to provide legal mechanisms to hold account perpetrators of gender-based discrimination.
“We are calling on our duty-bearers to do their jobs and fight this culture of discrimination and violence by passing LGBTQI-affirmative policies like the SOGIE Equality Bill. End anti-LGBTQI violence now,” it said.
