LAWMAKER WANTS ROAD SAFETY EDUCATION INCLUDED IN K TO 12 PROGRAM
1RIDER Party-list Rep. Ramon Rodrigo Gutierrez filed a measure that seeks to include Road Safety Education in the K to 12 program of the Department of Education.
“In order to reduce accidents, hospitalizations and death, an educational program is required to promote safety behavior in both drivers and pedestrians,” Gutierrez said in his explanatory note in filing House Bill 6449.
Under the bill, the necessary modules to be taken up according to year level under the K to 12 Program will be left to the discretion of the Department of Education, in coordination with the Land Transportation Office.
Gutierrez lamented that road safety education is only taken up in driving schools in preparation for the application of a driver’s license.
“This representation believes that one way to curb road accidents that could lead to damage in property, or worse, the death of an individual, is having the youth partake in Road Safety Education from the beginning of their education to instill the necessary discipline to abide by the traffic rules and regulations,” the lawmaker said.
