DEPED ROLLS OUT PISA FOR SCHOOLS TO SUSTAIN PH’S GAINS IN 2025 ASSESSMENT

/ 10 September 2026

THE DEPARTMENT of Education (DepEd) is rolling out the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) for Schools in the Philippines following the country’s improved performance in the 2025 PISA.

PISA for Schools is an assessment service developed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) that provides individual schools with results that can be compared with international benchmarks.

“We have to keep our momentum going after our best performance yet in PISA. This [PISA for Schools] can help us understand more clearly what is happening inside our schools and where support is most needed. The objective is to turn better data into better decisions, so that improvements in our national results are felt by learners in the classroom,” Education Secretary Sonny Angara said.

While the national PISA assesses education performance at the country level, PISA for Schools measures the same core competencies of 15-year-old students in reading, mathematics, and science, but provides results at the school level.

The digital assessment is also available in Tagalog, along with other languages, making it more accessible to participating schools and learners.

During a forum on sustaining the country’s PISA gains on Wednesday, DepEd Undersecretary for Strategic Management Ron Mendoza said PISA for Schools could be deployed more flexibly between international assessment cycles.

He said the assessment could also serve as a platform for schools and education officials to test questions and innovations aimed at improving learning outcomes.

“PISA for Schools can help strengthen collaboration between the public and private sectors, allowing us to learn from each other and improve learning for every Filipino learner,” Mendoza said.

The rollout is aligned with DepEd’s broader reform agenda under Angara’s leadership, particularly in strengthening decentralization, public-private partnerships, and digitalization.

The Philippines joins other countries, including Brazil, India, Kazakhstan, Spain, Thailand, and the United States, in using the assessment.
