/ 24 February 2025

THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas has attained its highest global and national ranking in the 2024 SCImago Institutions Rankings, marking a significant milestone in its research performance.

UST ranked fifth among 15 Philippine-based research institutions and 4,987th out of 9,054 research groups worldwide in this year’s rankings.

The SCImago Institutions Rankings assess research groups from government agencies, hospitals, universities, private companies, and nonprofit organizations, making it a broad and competitive evaluation.

In 2024, UST ranked in the 56th percentile overall, placing in the 23rd percentile for societal impact, 54th percentile for innovation outputs, and 79th percentile for research performance.

Since first appearing in the SCImago Institutions Rankings in 2020, UST has steadily improved its standing among Philippine research institutions.

The International Rice Research Institute and the University of the Philippines Diliman have consistently occupied the top two positions among Philippine institutions from 2009 to 2024.

SCImago’s rankings are based on a composite indicator that evaluates institutions based on research performance (50%), innovation outputs (30%), and societal impact (20%), using data from the Scopus database.
