UE STUDENT WINS FIRST PRIZE IN 36TH GAWAD CCP ALTERNATIBO FILM FEST
A STUDENT from the University of the East has won first prize in the experimental category at the prestigious 36th Gawad Cultural Center of the Philippines Alternatibo Film and Video Festival.
Angelo Miguel “Ulap” Chua was honored for his film titled “Rod,” which depicts the 1985 People’s Strike organized by the National Federation of Sugar Workers in Escalante, Negros Occidental.
Chua’s work distinguished itself among 12 finalists selected from numerous submissions nationwide. He received a trophy crafted by contemporary artist Leeroy New and a cash prize of P50,000.
Meanwhile, Andrea Leigh Bernardo, also from UE, was recognized as a finalist in the same category for her film “Apapatikansimansim.” The film explores the evolving dynamics between a father and son, examining how time and life shape their relationship.
Established in 1987, Gawad Alternatibo has produced and featured celebrated Filipino filmmakers and storytellers who have left a mark on the Philippine film industry. It has become a trendsetter in independent filmmaking in the country, alongside Cinemalaya.
