ATENEO PROF RECEIVES GRANT GOODMAN PRIZE IN PHILIPPINE HISTORICAL STUDIES
A PROFESSOR from Ateneo de Manila University has been awarded the Grant Goodman Prize in Philippine Historical Studies by the Philippine Studies Group, a committee of the Association for Asian Studies’ Southeast Asia Council.
Dr. Filomeno V. “Jun” Aguilar Jr. formally received the award during a ceremony held recently in Columbus, Ohio, USA.
The PSG recognized Dr. Aguilar for his extensive, rigorously researched, and interdisciplinary contributions, including works on migration, ethnicity, economic history, natural disasters, nationalism, and education. He was also cited for his leadership in Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints, which has become the leading academic journal in the field.
Dr. Aguilar earned his BS in Management Engineering from Ateneo de Manila University before completing his PhD in Sociology at Cornell University. He is a Professor of History, the former Dean of the Dr. Rosita G. Leong School of Social Sciences, and the current Assistant Vice President for Research, Creative Work, and Innovation at Ateneo.
Dr. Aguilar’s contributions as President of the International Association of Historians of Asia (IAHA), Chair of the Philippine Social Science Council, and Chair of CHED’s Technical Panel on General Education were also highlighted.
He is the thirteenth recipient of the Grant Goodman Prize and only the fourth awardee based in the Philippines, joining Resil Mojares (1996), Nicanor Tiongson (2015), and Fr. John Schumacher SJ (1994).
