DZAIVERSITY: THE INTERSECTIONALITY OF LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY

5 June 2021

The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila-Supreme Student Council (PLM-SSC) is the highest-duly constituted student government of PLM. Along with our number of purposes that adhere to student welfare, extending our attention and assistance to the different communities of our University has always been a priority of the council. Together with the premiere LGBTQIA+ organization of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, PLM Propaganda (PLM-PPG), we would like to reach our goal in fulfilling our sole duty to promote safe and equitable spaces for the LGBTQIA+ community whilst providing them supplementary aid.

For Pride Month 2021, we are launching a fund-raising event entitled, “DZAIVERSITY: The Intersectionality of LGBTQIA+ Community” which consists of four (4) sub-activities, namely: (1) Uncloseted SERIES: Chikka ni Indzai, (2) Magwari Podcast, QuizBhie, and (4) DRAG RACE: FITE MGA BESTIE! LABAN FOR DZAIVERSITY!

The event aims: (1) to enlighten and engage the students of the university with the LGBTQIA+ community, (2) to integrate the LGBTQIA+ community in the University’s Pride Month   celebration by promoting awareness on their experiences and laws concerning their right to being a part of every community, and (3) to advocate a gender-inclusive month of activities for the goal of raising funds for the Home for the Golden Gays.

The Beneficiary

The Home for the Golden Gays, or simply The Golden Gays, is a non-profit organization that focuses on the welfare of the elderly LGBTQIA+ community. It has witnessed the plight for equality of the LGBTQIA+ community even before its founding, sheltering some prominent figures like Walterina Markova, a “comfort gay” during the Japanese occupation in the Philippines, whose biography became a movie.

The organization mentioned above primarily receives its funds through outreach programs, donations, and sponsors. They sometimes perform in drag arranged by the Golden Gays Foundation to support their basic needs such as food, shelter, and healthcare. In difficult times, such as this pandemic, the members have different jobs in the city, including working as beauticians, street sweepers, or vendors, which put the members’ lives at risk, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this year’s celebration of Pride Month, as we put out the essence of diversity and as we feature the different facets and struggles of the LGBTQIA+ community, we celebrate with pride the strength of its elder members with all their sacrifices and contributions to turn the LGBTQIA+ community into what it is today. We also aim to cultivate the essence of pride by supporting the Home for the Golden Gays through fundraising for their basic needs and sheltering.

Uncloseted SERIES: Chikka ni Indzai

The Uncloseted SERIES: Chikka ni Indzai is a series of educational postings that will tell the narratives and sentiments from people whose insights will unfold different stories regarding the LGBTQIA+ community from various sectors of society. A total of 6 postings is allotted for this event with each one featuring a selected person with a specific background on these dates: June 7, 9, 11, 14, and June 16, 2021. Each featured person was asked a general question and a specific question that is adapted to their background.

QuizBhie

To assess and improve the students’ awareness regarding the LGBTQIA+ community, the organizers shall administer a QuizBhie. The QuizBhie is open to bonafide students of the University and will have a registration fee of Php 10.00. On June 28, 2021, the competition will take place from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM via Zoom, with its final round to be broadcasted live on PLM-SSC’s Facebook Page.

Rules/Mechanics

Quiz bee is composed of two parts: (1) elimination round, to be conducted real-time in a zoom meeting, and (2) final round, to be conducted real-time and streamed live on Facebook.

Players are to compete individually against each other first in the elimination round:

Score allotment for the elimination round:

Easy type – 1 point for every correct answer (9 items)
Medium type – 3 points for every correct answer (7 items)
Hard type – 5 points for every correct answer (4 items)

The quiz is time-pressured where each easy, medium, and hard type of question is given 10 seconds for the contestants to answer.

The organizers shall distribute the players in four breakout rooms.

Three facilitators will be assigned in each breakout room to act as (1) quizmaster, (2) score master, and (3) watcher. The watcher will also act as an extra in case the quizmaster or score master encountered problems.

Players will utilize the whiteboard in answering the questions.

Every round, the three players with the least scores will be eliminated and will not advance to the next round.

The two contestants left in each breakout room will move up to the finals round.

In the event of a tiebreaker, the first player can type “me” after the quizmaster says the word “go” will have the chance to answer. The two players who scored a point first will move to the final round.

The organizer shall transfer the final eight contenders into the main zoom meeting for the final round:

Score allotment for the final round:

Easy type: +3 points for correct, -2 points for incorrect (10 items)
Medium type: +5 points for correct, -4 points for incorrect (6 items)
Hard type: +10 points for correct, -6 for incorrect (4 items)

After the quizmaster tells the question, players shall answer within 5 seconds.

During this round, players will utilize the chatbox of the zoom meeting. They will have to type “me” after the quizmaster says the word “go.” The first player to send a chat will have the chance to answer.

The quizmaster/moderator shall head the final round and also the host for the live stream.

The organizer shall award the top players with the most accumulated points: Champion, 1st runner-up, and 2nd runner-up.

For the tiebreaker, the first player to get 2 points will be the winner.
