DEPED, MAYNILAD EYE SCHOOL WATER SECURITY AMID SUPER EL NIÑO THREAT

/ 28 October 2026

THE DEPARTMENT of Education (DepEd) and Maynilad Water Services, Inc. are exploring measures to ensure a reliable water supply in public schools amid concerns over the potential effects of a Super El Niño, particularly in Metro Manila.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara met with Maynilad officials on Tuesday to discuss possible collaboration in safeguarding access to safe drinking water, proper sanitation, and handwashing facilities in schools.

According to DepEd, the discussions also covered initiatives to promote water conservation and raise awareness about responsible water consumption as part of preparations for potential water supply disruptions.

The two parties emphasized the importance of ensuring that schools maintain adequate water and sanitation services, which are essential to protecting learners’ health, hygiene, and well-being.

Among those who attended the meeting were Maynilad Vice President and Head of Corporate Affairs and Communication Division Marie Antonette De Ocampo, Academic Services Head Oliver B. Sta. Ana, Government Partnership Head Chee Miranda, and other DepEd officials.

El Niño is characterized by unusually warm ocean temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, which can influence weather patterns and lead to prolonged dry spells and reduced rainfall in the Philippines.

The potential development of a Super El Niño has raised concerns over water availability, underscoring the need for schools and communities to prepare for possible disruptions.
