CHILDREN’S ONLINE SAFETY NOT SOLELY PARENTS’ RESPONSIBILITY — SOLON
PASIG City Representative Roman Romulo has stressed that protecting children in digital spaces should not rest solely on parents and guardians, saying online platforms must also take responsibility for ensuring the safety of young users.
Romulo welcomed the approval on third and final reading of the proposed Safe and Friendly for Kids in Digital Spaces (SAFE KIDS) Act, which seeks to strengthen safeguards for Filipino children against online risks.
The proposed measure aims to protect children’s privacy and shield them from harmful content, inappropriate interactions, and online activities that are not suitable for their age.
Romulo emphasized that digital platforms have a responsibility to ensure that the online spaces accessed by children are safe, secure, and appropriate for young users.
He stressed that every child has the right to learn, interact, and explore the digital world without being exposed to preventable online dangers.
The measure also promotes a shared-responsibility approach to online child protection, recognizing that safeguarding children requires the participation of digital platforms, parents, guardians, and other stakeholders.
Through the proposed legislation, lawmakers aim to strengthen protections for Filipino children as they increasingly use digital platforms for education, communication, entertainment, and social interaction.
