SENATOR PUSHES FOR STRONGER MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVES AMID RISING YOUTH SUICIDE CASES

/ 30 March 2026

IN RESPONSE to a worrying surge in suicide cases across Metro Manila, Senator Win Gatchalian is calling for the expansion and intensification of mental health programs to safeguard Filipino youth and prevent further tragedies.

The call comes after the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) reported that suicide cases in the region more than doubled in the first three months of 2026. From January 1 to March 23, the NCRPO recorded 111 cases, nearly triple the 38 cases reported during the same period last year.

“Amid the continuous rise in suicide cases nationwide, it is crucial to strengthen programs that promote the safety and well-being of our fellow citizens, especially in terms of mental health,” Gatchalian said.

He emphasized that the Filipino community needs strong mental health support now more than ever, as many grapple with daily challenges intensified by current crises.

Under the 2026 national budget, P742.6 million has been allocated for the implementation of the Mental Health Program, as mandated by the Mental Health Act (Republic Act No. 11036), a move Gatchalian says is essential to address the growing mental health needs of the country.
