LAWMAKER BACKS BILL EXPANDING SUPPORT FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM
SENATOR Joel Villanueva has expressed support for a proposed measure aimed at strengthening care and support services for children with autism and their families.
Villanueva voted in favor of Senate Bill No. 1822, also known as the National Autism Care Support and Inclusion Act, which seeks to expand access to early diagnosis, intervention, and long-term assistance for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The proposed measure aims to ensure timely medical and developmental interventions for individuals on the autism spectrum. It also seeks to build a stronger and more competent workforce of ASD professionals while expanding benefits under Philippine Health Insurance Corporation for those living with the condition.
Villanueva highlighted the challenges faced by families raising children with special needs, noting that many parents hope for a future where their children can live independently and with dignity.
Like many parents of 5.1 million children with special needs, according to the report of the Second Congressional Commission on Education, we continue to dream of a future where our child can live with dignity, independence, and the opportunity to thrive despite the challenges that come with his condition,” the senator said.
According to Villanueva, the proposed legislation would help families gain better access to trained specialists, allowing for earlier diagnosis, intervention, and sustained care for children with autism.
The bill forms part of broader efforts in the Senate to strengthen support systems for persons with disabilities and ensure that children with developmental conditions receive adequate healthcare and social services.
