THE ABACA Researchers and Innovators Team of Visayas State University (VSU) earned one of the country’s highest public service distinctions after receiving the Gawad Lingkod Bayan ng Pangulo Award under the 2025 Gawad Lingkod Bayani for their transformative contributions to the Philippine abaca industry.
The award was conferred during the PAGPUPUGAY 2025 ceremony at Malacañang Palace on January 28, 2026, with Executive Secretary Ralph G. Recto representing President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
The team is composed of National Abaca Research Center experts Dr. Romel Brigoli Armecin, Dr. Feliciano Gono Sinon Sr., Ms. Jedess Miladel Nuñez Salomon, Dr. Luz Ordiz Moreno, and Dr. Flora Mia Y. Duatin, who were recognized for their collective impact on agricultural research and farmer welfare.
VSU President Prose Ivy G. Yepes said the national recognition affirms the university’s commitment to public service through research and innovation, highlighting the team’s role in improving farmer incomes, revitalizing rural communities, and sustaining the country’s leadership in global abaca production.
Through years of research and field engagement, the VSU team generated science-based solutions across the abaca value chain, including tissue-cultured planting materials, registered improved varieties, enhanced fiber processing technologies, and strengthened farmer organizations and industry partnerships.
Conferred by the Civil Service Commission, the Gawad Lingkod Bayan ng Pangulo Award recognizes public servants whose collaborative efforts have produced lasting benefits to society, particularly in advancing innovation and inclusive development.
