LAWMAKER PUSHES FREE HIGHER EDUCATION TO ACHIEVE ‘ONE COLLEGE GRADUATE PER FAMILY’ GOAL
SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian expressed full support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s vision of having at least one college graduate in every Filipino family, saying the goal can be achieved through sustained investment in free higher education.
Gatchalian, who chairs the Senate Committee on Finance, said expanding access to tertiary education requires more than just tuition coverage.
He stressed the need to boost the absorptive capacity of state universities and colleges by building more facilities, hiring additional teachers, and ensuring that students who pass entrance exams are guaranteed a slot.
“We should also ensure that the Tertiary Education Subsidy prioritizes students from low-income households,” he added.
Gatchalian vowed to secure adequate and continuous funding for free college education until every Filipino youth who dreams of earning a degree can achieve it.
“As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, I will make sure there is sufficient and sustained funding for free college until we reach every young person aspiring to graduate,” he said.
