LAWMAKER PUSHES FOR STRONGER IMPLEMENTATION OF FREE WIFI IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS
SENATOR Bam Aquino has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the effective implementation of the Free Wi-Fi Law, particularly in public schools, through close collaboration with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).
Aquino recently met with DICT Secretary Henry Aguda to address implementation challenges of Republic Act No. 10929, or the Free Internet Access in Public Places Act, which aims to provide free internet in key public areas, including public educational institutions.
“As internet access becomes increasingly essential to education, we must ensure the proper and full implementation of this law, especially in schools,” said Aquino, who authored and sponsored the measure.
He emphasized that reliable internet connectivity in public schools opens up greater opportunities for students to access digital learning tools, research materials, and online educational platforms.
“This law helps level the playing field for students who rely on public schools. Access to free internet means better access to information, knowledge, and a brighter future,” Aquino added.
To address connectivity gaps in remote and underserved areas, Aquino vowed to work with the DICT to enhance infrastructure and accelerate rollout efforts.
He also committed to advocating for adequate funding during upcoming budget deliberations to ensure the Free Wi-Fi program reaches more schools nationwide.
Republic Act No. 10929 mandates free internet access in all national and local government offices, public libraries, hospitals, transport terminals, and most notably, public schools.
With the growing demand for digital learning, the senator underscored that bridging the digital divide in education remains a top priority.
