LAWMAKER URGES LGUs TO INTENSIFY FIGHT VS CHILD MALNUTRITION
SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian called on local government units (LGUs) to intensify efforts against child malnutrition as the country celebrates Nutrition Month this July, emphasizing the link between good nutrition and quality education.
“In celebration of Nutrition Month, I urge LGUs to ramp up feeding programs in schools and communities, improve access to nutrition services, and invest in long-term strategies such as livelihood support for families,” Gatchalian said.
He stressed the importance of early intervention and urged LGUs to fully implement the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) System, especially its nutrition components.
This includes strict enforcement of Republic Act No. 12199 or the ECCD System Act, which seeks a comprehensive and integrated approach to the development of children aged 0 to 4.
“Mobilizing LGUs to implement ECCD programs and services, including those related to nutrition, is crucial,” he said. “Ang laban para sa edukasyon ay sabay na laban kontra malnutrisyon.”
Gatchalian emphasized that malnutrition is not only a health concern, but also an educational and economic issue. Malnourished children are more likely to perform poorly in school, which could lead to long-term setbacks for the country’s workforce and development.
He called for stronger national-local partnerships to ensure children in vulnerable communities receive adequate nutrition and promoted food security initiatives and sustainable livelihood programs for families.
“Ensuring every child is well-fed and healthy is a vital investment in our nation’s future,” Gatchalian said.
