NU, UST EXTEND WINNING STREAKS IN UAAP TENNIS
DEFENDING champions National University and University of Santo Tomas kept their unbeaten streaks alive in the UAAP Season 87 tennis tournament with hard-fought victories on Monday (03 Mar 2025) at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center in the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
NU secured its third consecutive win after edging out UST, 3-2, in the women’s division. Elsie Abarquez and Kolin Cornell clinched the deciding point, overcoming Minette Bentillo and Justine Maneja, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7, in the second doubles match.
In singles play, UST’s Kaye Emana defeated Jasmine Jaran 6-2, 6-3, while NU’s JM Carcueva triumphed over Princess Dela Rita, 6-1, 6-2. Danna Abad outlasted Mica Emana in a tough three-set battle, 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4. UST’s Judy Padilla and Debbie Gom-os fought back to defeat Rovie Baulete and Adeline Abadia in the first doubles, 7-6(5), 3-6, 10-6.
In the men’s division, UST extended its dominance with a 5-0 sweep of Ateneo, marking its fourth straight win. Sebastian Santos delivered a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory in the first singles, while Ericjay Tangub triumphed over Stefano Gurria, 6-2, 6-3. Nilo Ledama defeated JD Velez, 6-2, 6-0, in the third singles. UST’s doubles teams also excelled, with Steven Sonsona and Symon Jaculan beating JJ Llavore and Gian Camingue, 6-4, 6-4, and Richard Bautista with Nash Agustines downing Aidyll Ignacio and JB Cuarto, 6-2, 7-5.
University of the Philippines (UP) defeated De La Salle University, 4-1, improving its record to 2-1, tying UST for second place. La Salle dropped to 1-3, while Ateneo remains winless at 0-3.
In other results, NU triumphed over La Salle, 4-1, while University of the East (UE) dominated Adamson University, 5-0. The Bulldogs and the Red Warriors are tied for second place at 3-1, while the Soaring Falcons and the Green Archers are struggling at 1-4 and 0-5, respectively.
