LAWMAKER PUSHES FOR CHILD TOURIST SAFETY ACT
SENATOR Risa Hontiveros is advocating for a measure aimed at preventing, mitigating, and responding to risks affecting children on vacation, leisure activities, or other tourism-related events.
In her Senate Bill 2971, or the proposed Child Tourist Safety Act (Sandy’s Act), Hontiveros noted that tourism is a vital economic industry for the country. She emphasized that it is crucial not only to enhance the experience of foreign and local tourists but also to ensure their protection and safety.
“There must be facilities that serve as an emergency response mechanism for potential accidents or injuries for all tourists,” she said.
The senator highlighted that risks such as death or injury to children during vacations can be mitigated with the presence of trained lifeguards, first responders, and quick access to emergency services like ambulances, as well as health facilities and supplies in tourist areas.
The bill aims to ensure that children and other visitors at Philippine tourist destinations have access to medical services, life-saving equipment, and emergency response measures.
