DEFENDING champion College of Saint Benilde showed San Beda who is the boss via a quick three-set, 25-14, 25-15, 25-14, victory for its third straight win in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the San Andres Sports Complex Saturday.

CSN leaned on Jade Gentapa who came away with 15-of-24 attacks aside from diahing out 10 digs and seven receptions.

Her teammate in Gayle Pascual also had a gem of two blocks aside from contributing 14 points for the Lady Blazers who needed only 66 minutes to hand the Lady Red Spikers their third consecutive loss.

But assistant mentor Jay Chua, who handled Benilde for this match in lieu of coach Jerry Yee, confided that they had to hurdle a minor hump in the game to retain their unblemished record.

“Siguro yung sa transition. Kailangan lang namin bantayan yung mga tao nila,” said Chua. “Since wala si coach Jerry, binigyan naman sila ng trust na maglaro and composed sa every point.”

Cristy Ondangan also had a remarakble performance of nine points as did setter Cloanne Mondoñedo who also had a solid outing for the Lady Blazers with 13 excellent sets and fired two service aces to finish with seven points.

Jessa Dorog also scored seven points, including two service aces.

In the other games, University of Perpetual Help System Dalta later joined Benilde in first place following a 22-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-19.

The Lady Altas rebounded from an opening set defeat to improve to 3-0, while sending the Lady Chiefs to their first loss of the season.

In the men’s division, San Beda rebounded from a tough five-set loss to Arellano with a 25-18, 25-14, 18-25, 25-21 win over Benilde to raise its record to 2-1.

Kenrod Umali went 20-of-30 attacks to finish with 22 points and had nine receptions while Ralph Cabalsa had five service aces to finish with 19 points for the Red Spikers.

Rookie Shai Omipon had 24 points, including two service aces, while Mary Rhose Dapol unloaded four service aces for a 19-point effort to go along with eight digs for the Lady Altas.

Newcomer Laika Tudlasan hammered 23 kills and collected seven digs while Trina Abay had three blocks to finish with 11 points for the Lady Chiefs.

Trisha Paras had 8-of-15 spikes for San Beda.
