CHESS Grandmaster Eugene Torre received an honorary doctorate degree from the Mapua University.

Torre studied in Mapua before joining international competitions. He was not able to finish his studies because his schedules became hectic.

He was declared grandmaster in 1974, the first in the Philippines and in Asia.

According to the Mapua Chess Players Facebook page, Torre first took Commerce and then shifted to Business Administration. During his time, Mapua was still located in Doroteo Jose.

He was inducted into the World Chess Hall of Fame in October 2022.

Torre is often involved with activities in Mapua such as in exhibition games.
