GATEWAY GALLERY FEATURES DOCUMENTATION OF MATERIAL CULTURE IN THE FEBRUARY 26 KULTURASERYE

23 February 2022

In celebration of National Arts Month this February, Gateway Gallery will livestream the KulturaSerye Talk tthat will focus on the critical task of documenting material culture. The KulturaSerye Talk, Dokumento: Recording Culture and the Arts, will be aired live on February 26, at 2 p.m, from the Gateway Gallery Facebook Page.

This National Arts Month, we will take a look into an important aspect of art and culture: documentation. Documentation is the recording of material and intangible culture, in photo, video, or audio, and used in the archiving, cataloging, review, study, analysis, and writing of the creative aspect of communities, artists, designers, cultural workers, and their groups. The documentation of these objects, as well as local customs, is critical for the reference and study of scholars or academicians.

In this KulturaSerye talk, Dokumento: Recording Culture and the Arts, viewers will see and understand how a seasoned photographer, Noel San Andres, has taken advantage of the medium of photography in documenting his objects of study, especially those relevant to the country’s local customs and culture. With a vast experience under his belt that spanned decades, San Andres will let us in on a journey on the joys and challenges of documenting our beautiful material, and intangible, legacy.

Noel San Andres is a cultural and travel photographer and an accomplished visual artist. He had mounted solo shows locally, such as the National Museum and CCP, and in venues abroad. He has spent much of his time setting up museums and educational displays that tell the real story of the Philippines. He works for the NCCA Experts and Resource Persons Bureau, contributor to IMag Photography Magazine, and Salig Book Publishing.

KulturaSerye, which started airing regularly in July 2020 to discuss timely cultural issues, is presented by Gateway Gallery, and co-presented by the Philippine Online Student Tambayan. The talk is supported by the J. Amado Araneta Foundation.

This KulturaSerye Talk is the first for 2022. The free online talk is free and provides a digital certificate for attendees who will answer the talk’s online evaluation form. John Carlo Santos, instructor at UP Los Banos, moderates the talk.
