/ 16 January 2022

A PROFESSOR from the Ateneo de Manila University was named the 2021 Achievement Awardee by the National Research Council of the Philippines-Division of Social Sciences.

The Achievement Awards recognizes individuals for their outstanding contribution in natural sciences, health sciences, engineering, social sciences, humanities, or other human endeavors.

“The Award recognizes the value of my scientific work. I dedicate my life’s work to fusing analytical and empirical understandings of the state, social movements, interpersonal relationships, and individual behaviors/mentalities,” Professor Emeritus Dr. Cristina Montiel said.

“The creative scientific add-on of my work is in mixing the different social layers into an organized logic, embedded in Global South realities,” she added.

The awarding ceremony will be held online on March 15, 2022.

Montiel’s researches focus on psychology of peacebuilding and democratic transition, active nonviolence, social justice, and other topics that speak from and about the Global South.

Among the other awards she received were the Distinguished Contribution Award by Psychologists for Social Responsibility (1998); the Ralph White Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Psychological Association’s Peace Psychology Division (2010); and the Lynn Stuart Weiss Lecture Award by the Division of Peace Psychology, American Psychological Association (2021).

She was also selected as an Outstanding Psychologist by the Psychological Association of the Philippines in 2016.

In 2021, she was elected lifetime Academician to the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines.
