HELP FIND FUR-EVER HOMES FOR PETS IN ANIMALS SHELTER—HERE’S HOW
Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) appeals to Filipinos to consider adopting pets instead of buying or getting them from friends or neighbors.
Keeping dogs and cats as pets has its long history. The interspecies bonding have always had a big impact on the human race because of their companionship, gentle and loyal nature. Thus animals, like people, also have rights to a safe and normal life.
In an email interview with PAWS Executive Director Anna Cabrera, she discussed how there’s two main sources of where Filipinos ‘adopt’ their pets; either by purchasing them from breeders or getting them from friends and neighbors.
“Some people like to use the term ‘adoption’ but it is not a real adoption if you got a pet from someone who is selling a pet or someone repeatedly ‘rescuing’ but allowing his or her rescues to get pregnant”
With the prevalence of stray and homeless dogs and cats in the streets of the Philippines. Cabrera pointed out that to address the problem, animal welfare groups should advocate adoption of rescued animals from shelters and to spay-neuter pets.
“There won’t be enough good homes for all animals. We can adopt to do our part in lessening the number of homeless pets but the long-term solution is really, to make it a point that all pets who are adopted or taken in are all fixed pets – spayed or neutered,” she stressed. Adding that hoarding animals or breeding animals is not good for animal welfare.
There’s a lot of homeless yet adorable and loving pets in animal shelters waiting for a home. You can also donate, join volunteer programs, and attend animal-related seminars for animal welfare advocacies.
