NU ENDS A 65-YEAR TITLE DROUGHT, REIGNS AS UAAP SEASON 84 CHAMPIONS OVER LA SALLE

The National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs ended the 65-year title drought after sweeping La Salle, 25-15, 25-15, 25-22, in Game 2 of the UAAP Season 84 women’s volleyball tournament best-of-three finals Tuesday night at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

NU showcased a spectacular performance all throughout the season, claiming the title with a clean 16-0 slate.

The Lady Bulldogs started slow with a 6-10 lead in favor of DLSU, but rookie MVP Bella Belen was unstoppable and fired a 19-5 fightback to claim the first set score with a massive 10-point gap, 25-15.

The Lady Spikers found it hard to recover in the second frame thanks to NU’s good floor defense, until Best Libero Jen Nierva scored to give NU another double-digit gap, 18-8, off a drop ball.

Alyssa Solomon, who scored game-high 18 points, finished the second frame with an attack, and even though La Salle had it with an overhead dig, it was not enough to keep the ball at play.

The Lady Spikers saw momentum in the third and last frame with a 20-17 lead, but NU refused to give up as the Lady Bulldogs capped a 7-0 run for the 24-20 championship point before Thea Gagate’s service error gifted NU their historic win.

Belen contributed 16 points in the win, Nierva provided 19 digs and 10 receptions, Best Setter Camilla Lamina had 14 sets, while Princess Robles added six points and 15 digs.

No La Salle player scored in double figures, as Thea Gagate, the season’s first best middle blocker, paced the team with only eight points, while Rookie of the Year candidate Leiah Malaluan scored seven.
