UAAP SCRAPS SEASON 83 DUE TO SAFETY ISSUES
The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) announced the cancellation of its 83rd season in a statement released on Friday evening, December 11.
The said decision was due to the dangers brought by COVID-19 to the student-athletes, management, and those involved in the operations of the league.
“After a series of discussions, the UAAP Board of Trustees (BOT) came to this difficult decision, putting major consideration on the health and safety of the student-athletes and those involved in the operations of our competitions,” the statement read.
With the big decision of the league, this would give the Universities ample time to re-think and re-plan their respective athletic programs for the next season.
“The decision will allow UAAP member-schools to plan their activities for the remainder of the academic year, as well as their athletic programs for next season.”
UAAP canceled its 82nd Season last April 7 of this year during the extension of the Enhanced Community Quarantine.
The league initially planned to launch UAAP Season 83 in the second quarter of 2021, but with no assurance of having face-to-face classes and with the risk of the virus still looming, the plan was ultimately scrapped.
Nonetheless, the BOT and Board of Managing Directors of UAAP still set their hopes up with the continuation of UAAP’s legacy.
“Both the Board of Trustees and the Board of Managing Directors will further discuss the implications of the cancellation for the guidance of the member-schools and student-athletes,” the statement ended.
