BALDWIN MORE INTERESTED IN GILAS PILIPINAS’ PERFORMANCE IN JORDAN RATHER THAN WINNING GAMES

"That's the whole point of going in and doing these things, is to learn more about these young players and how they step up at each level against each style of basketball. So the important thing is we've got more knowledge about our team and about our roster," Coach Tab Baldwin said on Gilas Pilipinas’ Jordan stint on Radyo5's Power and Play with Noli Eala.

Baldwin also averred that going to Jordan and winning games is not the primary goal of his program but the performance of the players individually and how they work together as a team.

Gilas Pilipinas who is now currently in the 31st basketball world rankings bagged three wins but at the same time suffered four losses.

The national team were not as solid as the roster they had during the third window of the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers in Clark as changes in the roster happened such as the new addition of Thirdy Ravena as well as the return of Rey Suerte, Matt Nieto, and Dave Ildefonso returning from injury

“Those four guys only really had four and a half days of preparation in the very short bubble we had before we left (for Jordan). And it was evident, especially for Matt and for Thirdy, who hadn’t had much preparation at all with the team. They were really out of sync,” Baldwin noted.

“And I just think it highlights the fact of what I’ve been saying: if we want to bring new players in, they need to have a considerable amount of time with the team. Dave and Rey weren’t away as Matt and Thirdy were, and they probably integrated themselves a little bit better. But by the end of the tournament, we were seeing improvements from Matt and Thirdy. At the beginning of the tournament, they didn’t look good. And they knew that.”

Nevertheless, the decorated-mentor shared that playing in Jordan equipped the team and ‘see different styles of play’ that would power the young guns in the long run.

“These players are young and that means they’re developing. We don’t know exactly how much development there will be between now and, say, the first quarter of 2023. We have players involved right now that may not look like a featured player or a guy that helps us that much, but a year down the track, a year and a half down the track we may see an entirely different play,” he said.

“That’s the whole purpose of having the program.”
