ALEX EALA ENDS FRENCH OPEN SINGLE STINTS BUT BOUNCED BACK IN DOUBLES WITH RUSSIAN PARTNER

Alex Eala fell short on womens' singles competition in 2021 French Open Girls after losing against Matilda Mutavdzic of Great Britain, but regained confidence after defeating Evialina Laskevich of Belarus and Alina Shcherbinina of Russia in Paris with her double partner, Oksana Selekhmeteva of Russia.

The 16-year old Eala was defeated right away in the first round of singles competition in a sweep of three sets, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-1.

Eala’s serves did not do her well throughout the first game that caused her to lose her first slate as she had 11 service breaks and nine faults under her racket.

But that setback did not stop Eala from doing her best as together with her Russian partner Shcherbinina rocked the first round of girls’ doubles play with a score of 6-4, 6-4, Monday night.

Oksana and Eala proved that they are a duo as they closed out two sets in the first round of the doubles play with Eala only having few mistakes, giving the opponent a chance for deuce after her double fault in the second set, 5-4.

The Filipino-Russian pair will have to suit up in the second round against either Ekaterina Maklakova and Maria Sholokhova of Russia or Sofia Costoulas from Belgium and Laura Hietaranta of Finland.

On the other hand, for the tennis sensation Eala, that being in such a big competition is already itself a victory.

“…being the only Filipina in the girls’ draw, in the entire tournament in fact, is massive.”
