ALEX EALA EARNS WILDCARD BERTH IN 96-PLAYER FIELD MIAMI OPEN
Alex Eala has earned herself a wildcard entry in the main draw of the Miami Open slated March 22 to April 3 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida.
For the second straight year, the 16-year-old netter has been granted a wildcard berth in the 96-player main draw field for her second stint in the WTA1000 tournament.
“I am excited to be playing in the Miami Open!” Eala wrote on her social media Sunday.
Last year, Eala was awarded a wildcard entry in the qualifying rounds of the Miami Open but bowed out to Slovakia’s Viktoria Kuzmova, 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, in the first round.
Now, she has been listed again as part of the Women’s Main Draw wildcard list that also includes four-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka, and 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin.
Completing the list are United States’ Hailey Baptiste, Ashylyn Krueger and Robin Montgomery, Australia’s Astra Sharma, and Linda Fruhvirtova of the Czech Republic.
The tournament player field caters a Grand Slam-level talent including 15 players with a combined 26 career Grand Slam singles titles in which 71 of the top 75 ranked women and 65 of the top 75 ranked men are entered.
Eala’s last stint was in the W25 Joue les Tours in France in late February where she finished in the second round of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) women’s circuit event.
