UE STUDENTS, FACULTY APPEAL FOR ACADEMIC BREAK

/ 13 July 2021

STUDENT groups and faculty members of the University of the East called on the school administration to implement an academic breaks for Academic Year 2021-2022 as they still struggle to cope with the distance learning.

In a letter to UE President Esther Garcia, the University Student Council and Faculty Association appealed for a two-day break after every major examination.

“The new learning setup that we are undergoing is far different from the setup that we normally undertake. For that reason, most of the students and professors have been striving to cope up with the situation, since the administration has yet to impose an academic break,” the groups said.

“The two-day academic break will ease the burden and help students and professors to rest and breathe from the workloads they have gone through during examination week,” they added.

They also asked the administration to refrain from giving requirements, submissions and activities on the week after the examination except for clinical requirements.

“With that, the students and professors will have enough time to prepare themselves for the new term. Moreover, the students who have clinical requirements will be exempted from this request since it will be hard for them to comply if they missed some activities,” they said.

Stressing that the mental and well-being of learners and teachers are as vital as academic standing, the groups reiterated that granting their request is “a big help to those who are exerting effort to withstand the pandemic.”

“We will not waver in forwarding their grievances until the administration heeds their call and sentiments. We will continue to advance and innovate our ways to address the issues concerning the interest of the whole studentry,” they said.
