SOLON BATS FOR NATIONWIDE EDUCATION AND AWARENESS PROGRAM AGAINST ILLEGAL DRUGS

/ 16 May 2021

REP. Kristine Alexie Tutor has filed a measure seeking to create a national anti-illegal campaign and research program.

In pushing for House Bill 6781 or the proposed National AIDCARE Program, Tutor is seeking to establish a fund exclusively for the creation of a nationwide education and awareness program on illegal drugs.

Based on the measure, the fund will be included under the annual budgets of the Department of the Interior and Local Government, Department of Education, Dangerous Drugs Board and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.

The fund will be used for the formulation of nationwide education and awareness strategy on illegal drugs, mandatory training for local government unit personnel, nationwide study on the nature and extent of drug abuse, national helpline for drug abusers and drug dealers, pushers and traffickers.

House Bill 6781 also mandates the DepEd to create a nationwide education and awareness program that shall either be included in the K-12 curriculum or instituted as a regular and frequent co-curricular activity or event done in all public schools covering all levels of basic education.

The composition of the program shall be reviewed and updated by the DepEd annually to ensure its effectiveness.

“If the government seeks to deter the mass proliferation of illegal drugs, we must rally the different agencies of government for such endeavor in order for it to succeed,” Tutor said in her explanatory note.
