SENATOR SUPPORTS PBBM’S CALL FOR LGUs TO ADDRESS MALNUTRITION
SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian expressed full support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s recent call for local governments to focus on addressing malnutrition, particularly among pregnant mothers and young children during their first 1,000 days of life.
Gatchalian emphasized that ensuring proper nutrition during this critical period is key to strengthening the educational foundation of future generations and plays a significant role in resolving the ongoing education crisis in the Philippines.
In his statement, Gatchalian highlighted the President’s directive to the Department of the Interior and Local Government, which mandates the inclusion of healthcare and nutrition as key indicators in the Seal of Good Local Governance.
This move aligns with the senator’s long-standing advocacy for early childhood care, as reflected in the ratified Early Childhood Care and Development System Act.
Gatchalian noted that the incorporation of ECCD indicators into the SGLG assessment criteria was a major step in prioritizing early childhood development and health in local governance.
The senator also stressed the importance of mobilizing local government units to deliver effective Early Childhood Care and Development programs, which include healthcare and nutrition services essential for addressing malnutrition and promoting overall well-being.
Gatchalian emphasized the need for a collective effort at the local level to ensure the success of such initiatives, ultimately contributing to the development of healthier and more capable learners.
Looking ahead, Gatchalian expressed optimism that once the ratified ECCD bill is signed into law, more focused efforts will be made to deliver nutrition and healthcare services to vulnerable sectors, particularly in underserved communities.
He concluded by reiterating that ensuring the health and nutrition of young learners is fundamental to their academic success. Without a strong foundation in early health and nutrition, students may struggle to reach their full potential.
Gatchalian underscored that investing in the health and nutrition of young children is not just a matter of social justice but an investment in the nation’s future.
