SENATOR SEEKS TO INTEGRATE CLIMATE CHANGE EDUCATION INTO SCIENCE CURRICULUM

/ 24 February 2023

SENATOR Imee Marcos has filed a measure that seeks to integrate the subject on Climate Change Education into the Science Curriculum of Grades 2 to Senior High School in private and public educational institutions.

In filing Senate Bill 1887 or the proposed Climate Change Education Act, Marcos stressed that climate change is a pressing concern worldwide.

The lawmaker believes that introducing the subject on climate change will help people, especially the youth, understand and address the impact of global warming.

It will also boost climate change literacy and encourage changes in attitudes and behavior to protect and preserve the environment.

“In the Philippines, over the past decade, tropical storms have struck the country more often and more severely. Scientists believe this occured because of climate change, in addition to the country’s significant geographic location with over 7,641 islands,” she said in her explanatory note.

The senator cited the Global Climate Risk Index released in September 2022 which showed the Philippines on top of the list of countries most at risk to climate change.

“Thus, education and awareness-raising for the people to have informed decision-making play an essential role in increassing adaptation and mitigation capacities of communities, and in empowering women and men to adopt sustainable lifestyles,” Marcos said.
