SENATOR CALLS FOR STRONGER SUPPORT FOR HIGHER EDUCATION
SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian has called for greater investment in Philippine higher education institutions after they failed to make the 2025 Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings by Subject in natural sciences.
He described this as a wake-up call, emphasizing the need for increased funding to strengthen research capabilities and improve global competitiveness.
Gatchalian highlighted the critical role of State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in advancing research and innovation. He stressed that without sufficient government support, these institutions would struggle to compete internationally.
“SUCs need adequate funding to enhance their research capacity and elevate their standing in global rankings,” he said.
To address these challenges, Gatchalian urged the government, academic institutions, and the private sector to collaborate in strengthening the country’s higher education system.
He emphasized that sustained investment in research and faculty development is key to ensuring that Philippine universities can compete on the global stage.
As part of his efforts to boost the internationalization of higher education, Gatchalian filed Senate Bill No. 2733, which seeks to allow Filipinos with dual citizenship to serve as faculty members, researchers, and administrators in public higher education institutions (HEIs).
He believes that tapping into global expertise will help build a stronger academic workforce and enhance the quality of education in the country.
The senator remains committed to pushing for reforms that will improve the global standing of Philippine universities.
He called on policymakers to prioritize education funding and create policies that attract top talent and promote research excellence.
Gatchalian also urged stakeholders to recognize the long-term impact of underfunding higher education.
He warned that without urgent action, the country risks falling further behind in global rankings, limiting opportunities for Filipino students and researchers in the field of natural sciences.
