SENATE TACKLES BATANG MAGALING BILL

/ 19 April 2023

THE SENATE has started to tackle a measure that aims to boost the chances of graduates to land jobs by improving their skills.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, chairman of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, has started discussing Senate Bill 2022, or the proposed Batang Magaling Act.

The measure seeks to ensure career opportunities for K to 12 graduates by equipping them with the knowledge, training and skills demanded in the labor market.

During the hearing, Gatchalian raised the increasing dissatisfaction with the government’s K to 12 program, with more Filipinos agreeing that the country should revert to the 10-year basic education curriculum.

He maintained, however, the need to keep up with global standards to increase the employability of Filipino students.

“We want to generate college-ready graduates, and work-ready graduates,” Gatchalian said.

Gatchalian said the measure seeks to address gaps in the K to 12 program.
