SENATE Majority Leader Joel Villanueva on Wednesday stressed the need to revisit the Anti-Hazing Law to ensure that it is being implemented properly.
This came after senators condemned the death of Adamson University student John Matthew Salilig allegedly due to hazing.
“Hazing and other forms of violence in fraternities and other organizations are pure evil. It needs to end now!” Villanueva said.
The senator, a member of Tau Gamma Phi, admitted that the incident saddened him.
“We are calling on our brothers in the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity, the leadership of Adamson University and the authorities to ensure that those involved are held accountable under the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018,” he said.
Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian expressed dismay that hazing activities continue despite the existence of the Anti-Hazing law.
“Isang buhay na naman ang nawakasan, isang pangarap ang nasira, at isang pamilya ang nawalan ng mahal sa buhay dahil sa umano’y insidente ng hazing na wala nang dapat lugar sa ating lipunan,” Gatchalian said.
