THE DEPARTMENT of Science and Technology  boosted distance learning by entering into more partnerships with various institutions and conducting more researches and innovations.

The department provided much needed support to students through scholarships, including the Science and Mathematical Education scholarship, DOST-SEI S&T Undergraduate scholarship, Junior Level Science Scholarship among others.

Earlier this month, the partnership between the Bank of the Philippine Islands Foundation Inc. and DOST was recognized for encouraging STEM students to innovate and submit projects on agriculture, food safety, traffic, health, and disaster management.

Moreover, the DOST’s Science Education Institute inked a partnership with the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation for the 4th “imake.wemake” project.

The collaboration aims to recognize this year’s GBF Young Scientist Awardees and to grant the latter with scholarships for their chosen STEM courses.

The SEI collaborated with the University of the Philippines’ College of Mass Communication Foundation, Inc. for a three-year study on the attitudes of K to 12 students towards STEM subjects in school.

The DOST also funded four research projects of the Department of Computer Science in UP Diliman, mainly about education, healthcare, transportation, and data analytics.

DOST-SEI researchers studied the so-called “Will-Skill-Tool” model that eyes technology integration in the classroom as an alternative for the “traditional blackboard and pen-and-paper teaching methods.”

Tech-Based teaching

The “Project Hands-on Teaching and Learning of Science” was launched to improve the teaching of Science through the use of a mobile science laboratory.

Additionally, the department conducted webinars and film contests in relation to science throughout 2021.

Projects for distance learning

The department also implemented projects to find solutions to the “digital divide.”

These include the Resilient Education Information Infrastructure for the New Normal, the “Development of Framework and Materials for Distance and Remote Learning via Datacasting” which seeks to improve the model for the delivery of lessons and learning materials in remote learning.
