CHED URGED TO SUSPEND CLASSES FROM MAY 10 TO 13
THE NATIONAL Union of Students of the Philippines is urging the Commission on Higher Education to suspend classes in all higher education institutions from May 10 to 13 to give students ample time to return to their hometowns and vote in the upcoming May 12 elections.
The appeal follows Malacañang’s announcement that it will issue a proclamation declaring May 12, election day, as a national holiday.
While the student group welcomed the move, they argued that a one-day break is not enough for students studying in urban centers who are registered to vote in the provinces.
“To ensure high student voter turnout, we believe CHED must declare class suspensions from May 10 to 13. This will give students enough time to travel, vote, and return to their schools,” said Iya Trinidad, NUSP National President.
Trinidad also underscored the importance of encouraging youth participation in the electoral process, noting that Generation Z—many of whom are of college age—makes up 28.79% of the voting population, or roughly 21.87 million voters.
“We must guarantee their ability to vote on May 12 by supporting calls for class suspension. The youth must not be denied the chance to help shape the future we deserve,” she added.
NUSP continues to advocate for measures that eliminate barriers to youth participation in democratic processes, especially during critical election periods.
