XAVIER UNIVERSITY STUDENTS RECEIVE DOST-PCHRD THESIS GRANT
BIOLOGY students from Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan have been awarded a research grant from the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development.
Their study, “Antibacterial Potentials and Cytotoxicity Activity of Macroalgae Mastophora rosea,” received a ₱75,000 grant under the DOST-PCHRD Undergraduate Thesis Grant in Natural Products program.
The research is conducted by Mary Rose Josephine Bosi and Mikaela Mae Cabanlas, under the mentorship of Dr. Judy P. Sendaydiego, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a faculty member of the Biology Department.
The study aims to investigate the medicinal properties of Mastophora rosea, focusing on its antibacterial and cytotoxic effects. It will assess the macroalga’s potential as a source of bioactive compounds for developing natural antibacterial agents against harmful bacterial strains.
“This award reflects the Biology Department’s commitment to promoting innovative scientific research that enables the sustainable use of marine resources for medicinal purposes. The department is also recognized by CHED as a Center of Development,” the university stated.
