UST HOLDS LECTURE SERIES ON TRANSLATION

IN CELEBRATION of International Day of Translation, the University of Santo Tomas Sentro sa Salin at Araling Salin will hold a series of free virtual lecture with the theme, ‘Agwanta!: UST Linggo ng Salin 2020’, ‪from September 24 to 30, 2020.

“Mula sa wikang Asi ng Romblon, may dalawang kahulugan ang salitang agwánta: pagtitiis sa panahon ng krisis at paghinto muna sa paghila ng lambat kapag nangingisda. Natatangi ang panahong ito sa kasaysayan ng mundo, lahat ay nagtitiis at humihinto sa nakagawian at nakasanayan upang malabanan ang pandemyang Covid19,” UST SSLAS said.

“Bahagi ng labang ito ang mga tagasalin bilang pangunahing ahente ng epektibong komunikasyon at palitang pangkultura kaugnay ng pagsasaling pangkrisis. Kaya sa pamamagitan ng UST Linggo ng Salin 2020, patuloy na palalawakin ang pagtalakay sa papel ng mga tagasaling Filipino sa pagharap sa mga hamon ng pagtuturo at pagsasalin sa panahon ng pandemya,” it added.

Prof. David Michael M. San Juan of Tanggol Wika, Prof. Maria S. Bulaong of Bulacan State University, and Prof. Marvin G. Lai of Polytechnic University of the Philippines will share their knowledge on the essence of teaching translation.The lecture will ‪start on September 24 at 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Interested participants must register through the link: https://forms.gle/R9fdXipKaEmjgnvG7

Meanwhile, speakers ‪on Sept. 26 are Consul Mary Jennifer D. Dingal of Konsuladong Panlahat ng Pilipinas sa Jeddah, Prof. Juanito N. Anot Jr. of Far Eastern University, and Loreta Laririt of International Philippine School in Jeddah. The lecture will be held ‪from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Manila with simulcast in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. ‪On September 28, Prof. Rosalyn G.Mirasol, Prof. Katrina Ninfa M. Topacio and Prof. Evalyn B. Abiog of UST Bahay Basa Eskuwela Reading Advocacy Group, will put emphasis on the functions of translation in the midst of the pandemic. The lecture series will conclude ‪on September 30 with the “Banyúhay 2020: Taunang Kongreso ng mga Tagasaling Filipino,” which aims to expand the knowledge on ‘Pambansang Agenda sa Salin,’ to compare and contrast the experiences of Filipino translators, and to value the role of Filipino translators especially during the public crisis.
