UP OFFICIALS ASKED TO ADDRESS STUDENTS’ CONCERNS

/ 14 February 2021

STUDENT groups in the University of the Philippines asked school officials to address issues and concerns on remote learning as the second semester of Academic Year 2020-2021 draws near.

In a letter addressed to Vice President for Academic Maria Cynthia Rose Bautista, the University Student Council along with Rise for Education Alliance-Diliman, urged UP administrators to ease the burdens of learners and teachers.

“It has come to the attention of the student alliance, as well as its member formations including student councils, that many students still have numerous concerns on the state of their learning next semester given what transpired from the previous semester,” the letter read.

“Concerns ranging from academic workload, to mental health and wellness concerns, to learning assistance, among others are still being raised by the constituency,” it added.

Last semester, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs conducted a survey to determine the concerns of students and gather suggestions on the distance learning set-up.

However, the student body said that the university has yet to declare how it will address the concerns of students.

Students called on the UP administration to address their plight as well as the concerns of faculty and other staff.

The student body sought a dialogue with school officials to discuss their concerns and formulate viable solutions to ensure that no member of the community is left behind.

“Let us work together during these trying times especially in protecting and upholding our student constituents’ democratic rights and concerns on academics,” it said.
