UE URGED TO REIMPLEMENT 2-DAY ACADEMIC BREAK

/ 14 September 2022

A STUDENT group at the University of the East urged the school administration to reimplement the two-day academic break policy after every major examination.

In a letter to UE President Ester Garcia and Chancellor Zozimo Battad, Central Student Council President Rabbi Polina Cruz said that in-person and online classes took a huge toll on learners’ mental and physical health conditions.

“The student body would like to reiterate its call for the reimplementation of academic break as it was deemed to be effective in ensuring that students’ welfare is considered during these times,” Cruz said.

“The request follows the same concept of academic break from last academic year which consists of a 2-day academic break every preliminary and midterm examination,” she added.

In August 2021, Garcia issued a memorandum regarding the approved academic break after every major examination for the tertiary and graduate school levels.

She said only asynchronous classes must be held during the two-day academic break, but quizzes and submission of activities are not allowed.

Cruz stressed that there should be no synchronous and asynchronous activities and classes during the academic break.

“The reimplementation of the academic break policy shall not disrupt the academic calendar, if carefully assessed by the administration and student council officers, as with its implementation last year,” she pointed out.

Cruz believed that the short break will benefit both the faculty and the students after a “heavy examination week.”
