STUDENT groups of University of the East on Saturday asked school officials to waive miscellaneous fees for their on-the-job training.

The Central Student Council and the College of Arts and Sciences Student Council said the added miscellaneous fees are unjustifiable, saying the fees will not be utilized by the learners.

“The fact that there will be no opportunities of entering the campus nor using its facilities due to our recent situation. It must be emphasized that students expect to understand every aspect of what they will be paying for, especially during a time when financial resources are insufficient,” the students said in a letter to UE President Ester Garcia.

Stressing the need to justify why payments have not changed amid the distance learning modality, the student body requested for a breakdown of fees.

“We are confident that school fees will be reduced significantly, given that many school facilities, energy, and other physical resources will most likely remain unused by students,” they said.

“Furthermore, as the university remains to adapt the new normal of digital learning for the next school year, students are still unsure of how the university intends to effectively implement online OJT without compromising its significant contribution and benefit to the professional skills, capabilities, and development of the students in their respective careers,” they added.

The groups also urged UE administration to provide specific instructions on whether the OJT fees are included in the scholarship grant, as well as the clear guidelines for the upcoming OJT period.

“While we understand the university’s efforts, financial state, and rationale for preserving educational development, we also understand that the right and choice of the students to be informed must, at the very least, be made by the institution in a reasonable manner,” they said.
