THE SORSOGON State College will soon ban eight types of single-use plastic in all of its campuses.

For the second semester, the school will no longer allow the use of plastic cups less than 0.2 millimeters in thickness, drinking straws, coffee stirrers, plastic spoons, fork, knives, and “plastic labo” or thin translucent plastic bags in its Bulan, Castilla, Magallanes, and Sorsogon City campuses.

The school issued a memorandum mandating its personnel, students, and visitors to follow the directive. It also declared every January as Zero Waste Month.

The SSC also warned against the burning of waste, in accordance with the Clean Air Act and the ESWM Act of 2000.

It reminded students, faculty and staff to segregate medical wastes like face masks, paper tissues, and gloves to help curb the spread of Covid19 in campuses.

The initiative is in support of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, National Solid Waste Management, Climate Change Commission, Break Free from Plastic, The Ecowaste Coalition, Zero, Waste Coalition, Greenpeace Philippines, and Mother Earth Foundation.
