CLSU PROF NAMED BEST ORAL PRESENTER AT INT’L SEMINAR IN TAIWAN

/ 1 February 2024

A PROFESSOR from Central Luzon State University was named the Best Oral Presenter during the 11th International Seminar in Sport and Exercise Psychology held in Taipei, Taiwan.

Dr. Jay Santos, Dean of the College of Arts and Social Sciences, was recognized for his paper “Academic Identity, School Belongingness, Athletic Identity, and Athletic Expectations as Predictors of Academic and Athletic Time Use of College Athletes.”

It was co-authored by Dr. Michael Sagas from the University of Florida.

The study focuses on the intricate balance between academic and athletic commitments among college student-athletes.

It aims to address the considerable time demands faced by student-athletes, who must juggle academic responsibilities with rigorous athletic training and competition schedules by analyzing a subset of the 2015 United States National Collegiate Athletic Association GOALS data.

“Key findings revealed that academic identity positively predicted academic time use while negatively impacting athletic time allocation. Conversely, athletic identity emerged as a positive predictor of the time devoted to athletic endeavors,” CLSU said.

“Additionally, the research explored the effects of race, gender, and division level on the academic and athletic engagement of college athletes, shedding light on disparities and potential areas for improvement,” it added.

The ISSEP 2024 was organized by the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, National Taiwan Normal University, and the Society for Sport and Exercise Psychology of Taiwan. It was participated with more than 200 participants from 10 countries.
